Appointed Persons' First Aid

For Any member of an organisation who is likely to find themselves taking charge or who has been appointed to take charge of first aid equipment during a first aid emergency, in the absence of a qualified First Aider.

A one-day, non-assessed course, recommended by the HSE in the new ACOP L74 as the minimum level of training for persons in low-risk workplace environments.

Aims

To provide participants with sufficient knowledge and confidence to deal with an accident until a qualified first aider or the emergency services take charge of the situation.

Learning Objectives

On completion of the training, successful candidates should have the knowledge and understanding of:
estimated annual cost to society through accidents and ill health is £11 to £16 billion Principles of first aid.
25 million working days are lost annually The action to be taken in the event of an emergency.
25000 people are forced to give up work through injury The correct method of basic life support
Uninsured losses amount to £315 per employee Typical major injuries and the action to be taken to preserve life.


Outline Programme

The course includes sessions on:

On-site investigation Aims and principles of first aid.
Taking of witness statements What to do in an emergency.
Gathering of evidence, measurements, photographs Basic Life Support (BLS).
Collation of supporting documentation Management of the unconscious casualty.
Collation of supporting documentation Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded or bleeding.
Collation of supporting documentation Assessment and treatment of fractures, dislocations and soft tissue injuries.
Collation of supporting documentation Assessment and treatment of burns.
Collation of supporting documentation Assessment and treatment of miscellaneous medical conditions.

Length:
1 day, 09:30 - 16:30

Candidate Requirements

All candidates should be aware that the course is of a practical nature therefore casual clothes should be worn. Female personnel attending are advised to wear trousers.

Certification

On successful completion of the course and final assessment, the delegate will receive a certificate of attendance. This is valid for 3 years.
