	CITB - Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Refresher Course
Overview The SMSTS two day refresher course is the perfect way to bring health and safety knowledge up to date. As well as giving a thorough understanding of legislation, the course also covers health, safety, welfare and environmental issues. Audience The refresher course is designed for existing SMSTS certificate holders and should be taken every five years to help stay up to date with the latest changes in the industry. Site Managers and Supervisors who do not hold the SMSTS certificate should sit the five-day course instead. For those who have previously completed their SMSTS course 5 years ago and wish to renew their certificate. You can undertake the Refresher course within 6 months either side of your SMSTS pass date. Objectives Upon completion of this course, candidates will be able to:
	Appreciate recent developments in construction legislation accident causes, costs and reasons for prevention
	Understand the legal system, relevant legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice.
	Conduct risk assessments
	Monitor health and safety performance
	Understand best practice in the management of sub-contractors
	Disseminate information to operatives and sub-contractors.

The main areas covered by the syllabus are:

	Introduction to Health and Safety Management
	Managing Health and Safety
	Responsibilities of Supervisors and Managers
	Measuring and auditing health and safety performance
	Control of hazards and risks

The course will help the delegate to devise and/or use effective communication with the work force and manage the site safety in compliance with existing legislation.

Assessment is determined by reaching a minimum level of achievement against four criteria:

	Full attendance of all SMSTS training course sessions
	Performance in each of the four core SMSTS exercises
	An overall review by the SMSTS trainig course tutor
	A pass mark in the 50 question multi-choice paper

Successful candidates will be awarded the CITB Construction Site Management Safety Training Certificate (SMSTS). This certificate will remain valid for 5 years.
